RocketTheme Joomla Template Blank Page Fixed

Last week I was helping a friend set up a new Joomla web site. I've done quite a few of them, so there were no problems with the installation. Everything was working fine until I installed the Leviathan theme from RocketThemes.com. When I tried to open the home page, all I got was a blank, white page.

When I viewed the page source, I saw that only 3 or 4 lines of html had been sent to the browser, and the last line was Joomla PHP code that should have been stripped out.

A Way to Correctly Round Currency with MySQL

After a lot of searching to a solution to the "rounding to even" feature that incorrectly rounds currency using the standard MySQL functions, I finally found a solution that looks very promising. Hopefully this will save someone time and frustration.

Passing VBA Collections to a .Net Com Interop Class

I recently had the need to use the .Net Com interop features to pass a collection from a Microsoft Access VBA application to a VB.Net class. Apparently VBA collections and .Net collections are not compatible because it didn't work at all. So, I did what any decent programmer would do, I Googled it. I found several suggestion, none of which worked completely. I eventually decided to use the method below. It requires that the VBA application pass a Collection object to the .Net class. The .Net class can then work with the collection, and even return it to the VBA application.

Extracting files from OLE Object fields in an Access database using VB.Net

This one took more research and experimentation than I originally thought it would. There are a lot of posts out there on the internet that ask how to do this, but not many answers that actually work. I found the key that finally lead to a solution here. What really threw a wrench in the gears was the fact that Microsoft completely changed the file format between Office 2007 and previous versions, so the code to extract a Word 2003 document does not work to extract a Word 2007 document. It was definitely a challenge, and also a bit of fun (programmers are strange like that).

A Fix for the WPF MenuItem Disabled Problem

I just recently started using the WPF with .Net.  It is amazingly similar to the GTK that I have used on Python projects.

I encountered an issue when I started using menus; sometimes the menu items are disabled when they shouldn't be, especially after returning from a modal dialog.  Clicking on a blank space on the form mysteriously reenabled them.  Multiple Google sessions and even some time spent on the Microsoft web site didn't yield any positive results.  I followed all of the advice concerning Commands and CommandBindings but there was no change in the behavior of the menus.

A VB.Net Implementation of Verhoeff's Error Detection

I recently worked on a project that sent a dataset to a web service and received a confirmation code that used Verhoeff's decimal error detection to verify that the code was received without any errors.

I don't pretend to have any idea how it works, but it does. This implementation places the check digit at the beginning of the code string (YXXXXXXXXX - where Y is the check digit).

Web Service Compression for the .Net Compact Framework

I was working on a project for a client who was developing a web service to load data from an SQL Server database onto a Windows CE device. The project was already well under way before I was asked to do some work on it. The web service was easy enough to get running, but because of the way xml web services are implemented, it required a huge amount of bandwidth to send even a small amount of data. And a normal download could be thousands of records.

After much Googling and not a few failed attempts, I finally found a way to compress the data sent to and from a Windows CE device.
